Doctor Rubato

Life at its own tempo

Some say, “march to the beat of a different drummer.” Some say, “to each his own.” But we all have that drive inside us to go faster, slower, forward, back, or off on some wild diversion. Doctor Rubato is a celebration of those of us willing to live our own lives on our own terms.

Biography

People have been asking: “Who is Doctor Rubato?” I’m here to answer your questions.
Rubato was born in Northern California wine country and grew up in the 60s and 70s. Hence, much of his musical influence comes from music that was popular at that time. He was an amateur musician from an early age, but pursued other directions starting in the 80s, when he relocated to Boulder, Colorado.
Rubato is now known as the most prolific inventor in Colorado, with hundreds of patents to his name. He also spent time as an amateur triathlete, competing in hundreds of races, in Colorado and around the world. But more recently, health concerns have left those pursuits in the rearview mirror and given Rubato the opportunity to bring his music to the top of his list.
Since childhood, Doctor Rubato has favored music that doesn’t follow the crowd. Artists that are a bit quirky. Artists that are clearly having a blast when they perform. Some examples of his influences include Tom Lehrer, Dan Hicks, Tom Waits, Rickie Lee Jones, Barenaked Ladies, Joe Jackson, and XTC. Also, Donovan, Phil Ochs, Paul Simon, Crash Test Dummies, Jefferson Airplane, Joni Mitchell, Pati Smith, Tracy Chapman, and many more.
Rubato is a musical term that tells the musician to play with the tempo to enhance the feeling of the musical piece. He likes to think of this as an instruction to march to the beat of a different drummer. It’s more than just a musical term, but rather a way of life.

Cover art for the album "Stealing Time" by Doctor Rubato. Doctor Rubato is dressed in white, playing his Taylor acoustic guitar, and appears to be singing. He is sitting on a log in the middle of a creek. The water is coming from behind him on his left and cascading down the log he is sitting on, to his right. His bare feet are in the water, along with some rocks and twigs. Behind him is a hillside with mossy boulders, bushes, and fallen branches. The area behind him is partially in the sun and partially shaded.

Doctor Rubato, dressed casually, performs onstage at Roots Music Project in Boulder CO. He is sitting on a red stool, playing his guitar, which is cabled to an unseen sound system, and singing enthusiastically into a microphone on a mic stand. Stage curtain is behind him. An empty wooden stool is in front of him and to his right. A second guitar resting on a guitar stand is behind him and to his left. In front of him is a box with a number of cables attached and a monitor speaker. A bunch of cables on the stage in front of Doctor Rubato are presumably connecting all the components of the sound system.
